Since Clive sold his name, and now sits back and lets others write his schlock, I am done with him. Sorry Clive. You made good money when you wrote, now you are fooling people with your crap. Look at the cover. Almost legal 'small print' for the actual writer. Buh Bye

I have nothing bad to say about this thriller. It is my first book by Clive Cussler and it is fabulous - with interesting and kind of original plot, charming heroes, very, very bad villains, interesting popular science and lots and lots of action. It reminds me very much of the Sigma Force series by James Rollins - I don't know who started first, but now I get why Cussler is so respected among fans of thrillers and adventures. Five stars.

Clive Cussler has always written fast-paced, interesting thrillers, and he is one of a handful of authors in the action/adventure genre who I really never tire of reading. Somehow, he manages to keep his novels fresh even as he uses the same formula time and again (a historical incident involving bad guys as a prologue, then a flash forward to the present where somehow, the historical incident becomes ensnared with present-day bad guys and the National Underwater Marine Agency, or NUMA character..more

A solid (but not outstanding) input into the NUMA Files series as created by Clive Cussler. I find these books to be a lot of fun, but this is not the best. Onto the next in the series..
A hohum thriller novel. Didn't grab as others have from this author.

We start in the Azores with Hudson Wallace (great name!) and his Lockheed Constellation and the adventure quickly goes into high gear. Then starts the story of the Kinjara Maru and where we first see our main character Kurt Austin about to embark on a journey, he thought, to join his friend Joe Zavala for a submersible race in their prototype Barracuda and some much needed R&R. Of course if they actually GOT their R&R we wouldn't have a story, would we?

This is a book about magnets, and all the power therein. Hardly do principles of superconducting, particle acceleration and inexplicably powerful compounds make for compelling reading. But add some stock paper-thin characters and a mildly interesting, albeit totally impossible, storyline and there's enough inertia to drag dear reader to the finish. Mercifully!

This is another Kurt Austin adventure from the NUMA Files, and it's not bad. As a matter of fact, it is pretty darn good, considering that, as with all of Cussler's novels, it features an extraordinarily unlikely situation with wholly unbelievable action, based on science that just won't happen. But that has been true of all of Cussler's books, or books with which he is involved in these end-of-life pairings, and we still get the books and read them, because they're great fun to read. A favorite sweatshirt; a grilled cheese sandwich; the smell of warm towels fresh out of the dryer; any Cussler story from the Numa Files. Predictable and comforting are not necessarily equated to 'bad'. There has never been a Cussler book that doesn't have the ruggedly handsome hero, his ingenious sidekick of complementary ethnically diverse heritage, a textbook villain of the highest caliber of sinister, and the obligatory hottie who is immune to the charms of our hero.
But that's okay. As long..more

OK, like my friend Louise says, you always know what you are getting with a Clive Cussler book. I started reading about Dirk Pitt many years ago on a recommendation from Brent Erickson. I have been a fan every since and look forward to each and every book in any of the series. Like I started out. . . you always know what you are going to get: a hero and a villian. The bad guy is out to destroy or control the world and the hero of course, saves it! Whether it is Dirk Pitt or Kurt Austin, Joe Zava..more

Yet another fast paced thriller from the Grand master of Adventure Clive Cussler. This is my first reading of NUMA Files. I am a fan of Dirk Pitt, when my hero is also in the story my joy doubled.

A good solid action thriller that will satisfy any fan of the genre. Clive Cussler can tell a story and put together a sentence better than most. C'mon who didn't like Sahara AND the movie with Matthew McConaughey? This guy can tell a story and likely end up on a best-seller list. But lately, well..I'll get into that later*..

Number 9 of the NUMA Files.
Same old formula of historic incident - in this case it's a plane carrying a Russian refugee and his luggage to the U.S. via the Azores which disappears over the Atlantic - which gets tied into a present-day incident.
NUMA employees, Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala are travelling to a submersible race and stumble over a cargo ship, in the process of being scuttled by pirates. Only Kurt recognizes one of the pirates as a mercenary from his past.

In Clive Cussler's Devil's Gate, the 9th installment in the Kurt Austin NUMA Files action-adventure series, this captivating novel would have you hooked in no time. It all started for Kurt Austin and his crew with their latest assignment to salvage a sunken ship at the bottom of the ocean. That's when the Russians sent Katarina, a fellow scientist to be a spy on the same ship. But low and be hold, that's when they team up and join forces to eliminate another threat. Someone had gotten hold of a..more

Another thrill a minute story. Once again, set on the high seas, it starts with an aeroplane crashing while trying to smuggle a Russian defector to the USA. Jump forward a few years and a ship is destroyed by some mystery weapon, the surviving crew shot and the wreck sent to the bottom of the ocean. NUMA are nearby and rescue the Captain's wife, but are then drawn into the mystery surrounding the episode. Enter a megalomaniac African dictator, a ship's graveyard next to a magnetic anomaly, missi..more
A ship sinks due to pirates and Kurt interviews. But this was no ordinary pirates since they sink the whole ship in such a short period. Normally they take the goods and run, but instead these methodically sink the ship as fast a possible. Then Kurt and Joe are in the middle of a underwater race when some sort of disturbance threatens to crash them into a large tower of rock, making a new discovery in the process. Yet, someone is watching Kurt's every move waiting for the right moment to strike...more

Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala rise to their zenith when a weapon of almost mythical power is about to be unleashed upon the United States and other major nations. Oh, they don't do it alone, it takes a team of unlikely and sometimes unwilling suspects to undo the audacious plan plotted and executed by pure evil.

Ninth in the NUMA Files suspense series revolving around Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala.
Be sure to read the Prologue.
My Take
Okay, this was not one of my favorites. Normally, I can't read fast enough. This one I actually put down every once in awhile as my mind wandered. There's action in here, but it's a bit toned down, not like the usual. Still, there's plenty of fun gadgets, great escapes, and the usual romance spiced with danger.

Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala are again out to save the world from a tyrant. This tyrant is Djemma Garand, a native of Sierra Leone who is bound and determined to bring his country's rating up from being one of the poorest to a much higher standard. Garand, with the help of scientists he has coerced, is developing a superconductor that could take out the richest of nations.

I like the story, but it took me a long time to read it. Especially in the beginning, it felt slow building up the twists and plot. However, as I have read several other novels from the NUMA Files, I anticipated there will be more to the story. I enjoyed, and at about half way it got more and more interesting and felt like a real page-turner.

Quite an enjoyable read although there were no surprises here as the hero saved the day at the end of the day.
I think it's interesting to see the idea of rays being used and the leader of a West African country trying to challenge the US. Character-wise, I think this was quite well developed.
A good read.

3.6 stars. This is my first book by Cussler.
I wish I’d started with an older one as I feel (and heard) that he isn’t trying as hard, is running out of ideas and using ghost writers etc. Nevertheless this was a fun and fast paced read. Many many cheesy moments, super pro USA, trying to be political without I imagine doing a ton of research. But that’s not why one reads Clive Cussler I guess

Another suspense filled novel of the NUMA Files and Kurt Austin Adventures. I am a big fan of these novels. Very adventurous. I found it to be entertaining. It went down to the last chapter to find out what happened.
One of his better books..although I did have to read the prologue again after I read the epilogue..then I had to read the epilogue again. So, it went prologue-book-epilogue-prologue (2nd time)-epilogue (2nd time.) But maybe that's just me. It was worth the effort.

Cussler began writing novels in 1965 and published his first work featuring his continuous series hero, Dirk Pitt, in 1973. His first non-fiction, The Sea Hunters, was released in 1996. The Board of Governors of the Maritime College, State University of New York, considered The Sea Hunters in lieu of a Ph.D. thesis and awarded Cussler a Doctor of Letters degree in May, 1997.
