To download or add songs to an iPod nano, you use a process called syncing, which moves music from your iTunes library to your iPod. The same process adds other things your iPod nano — such as podcasts, TV shows, and photos — and charges its battery. Syncing is simple and after you do it the first time, you hardly need to think about it again.
Apple discontinued the iPod Nano on July 27, 2017.
How to Download Music to an iPod Nano
How can the answer be improved? If the latter is the case, unfortunately, you cannot download your playlists to the iPod Nano because the Nano does not support installinga and running apps. Spotify requires you to.
You need to have iTunes installed on your Mac or PC to download music to an iPod nano. You add music to your iTunes library on the computer by ripping songs from CDs, buying music at the iTunes Store, or copying other compatible MP3s on your computer to iTunes. Then, you are ready to sync.
- Connect your iPod nano to your computer using the cable that came with the device. You do this by plugging the cable into the Lightning or Dock Connector on the nano and the other end of the cable into a USB port on your computer. The iTunes program should automatically launch when you plug in the iPod (if it doesn't, launch iTunes).
- If you haven't already set up your nano, follow the onscreen instructions in iTunes to set it up.
- Click on the iPod icon in the top left corner ofiTunes, beneath the playback controls,to open the iPod management screen.
- The Summary screen shows information about your iPod nano and has tabs in a sidebar at the left side of the screen for managing different kinds of content. Click Music near the top of the list.
- In the Music tab, check the box next to Sync Music. Then check the boxes for the available options:
- Entire Music Library syncs all the music in your iTunes library to your iPod nano. This works when the size of your iTunes library is smaller than your nano's capacity. If it's not, only a portion of your library is synced to the iPod.
- Sync Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres give you more choice about the music that goes on your iPod. You specify which playlists, genres or artists you want in the sections on the screen.
- Include music videos syncs videos if you have any.
- Include voice memos syncs voice memos.
- Automatically fill free space with songs keeps your nano full.
- Click Apply at the bottom of the screen to save your choices and sync the music to your iPod.
Once the sync is complete, click the Eject icon next to the iPod nano icon in the left sidebar of iTunes and you're ready to use your nano.
Each time you plug the iPod nano into your computer in the future, iTunes syncs with the iPod automatically, unless you change the settings.

The iPod Nano is a digital music player from Apple. If you've just purchased your first Nano and want to download songs to it, you only need to follow a few steps, and you'll be up to your ears in tunes in no time.
Step 1
Install iTunes on your computer. This program, available as a free download from Apple, consolidates and organizes the music on your computer so that you can easily transfer it to your iPod Nano. You can download versions for both Mac and Windows computers (see link in Resources). Once you have iTunes up and running, you can buy songs from the iTunes store, rip songs from your own CDs, or add MP3 files from your computer to your iTunes library.
Step 2
Plug the white cord that came with your iPod Nano into a USB port on your computer, and plug the other end into your Nano. The computer will automatically recognize the iPod Nano after a few seconds, and it will guide you through setup, which shouldn't take longer than five minutes. Now you can plug the device into your computer at any time to transfer songs to your Nano or take songs off it.
Step 3
Transfer music. You can set up iTunes to automatically sync your iPod Nano with your music library, so that the songs and playlists on your Nano will be identical to those on your computer. If you choose this option, all you have to do is plug in the Nano, and all songs will be transferred. You can also manually manage your music. With your iTunes library open, simply drag songs from the library to the Nano icon in the left-hand column of iTunes. The track will copy to the Nano. Click on the Nano icon to see that the song in the Nano's library. To take a song off your Nano manually, click the title in your Nano's library, then hit 'Delete' on your keyboard. The song will instantly be removed from the Nano.
Eject the Nano. When you're finished downloading or deleting songs and want to unplug the Nano, click the 'Eject' icon to the right of the Nano icon in iTunes. Wait a couple seconds until the Nano icon disappears. The Nano and USB cord can now be unplugged from the computer.
Tip
- The iPod Nano's battery charges through the USB cable. If you leave it plugged in after ejecting, the battery will still charge.
Warning
- When you plug the USB cable into your Nano, make sure that the small gray rectangle on the connector is facing upward, in the same direction as the iPod screen. If you force the cable in upside down, it could damage or break the cable connector or Nano.
